on your schedule

Marine Kid's Week Activities:  Remember that kid's week activities can be done at any time within your own bubble.  See below for today's recommended activity and check other days for other possible activities.

We have two suggestions for you to kick off Maritime Kid's Week.  There will be cookies and icing in Kid's packs picked up Sunday or Monday.  Monday could be dedicated to decorating your cookies.

And then, how about getting out to see some of the decorated businesses in your area and voting for your favorites. Stay tuned for more information on how to vote.

We have structured our suggested activities so that they can be done within the safety of your own home bubble.  There are no "in person" gatherings at this year's festival.

The Whale Sanctuary - Lori Marino

Monday March 15, 2021 : 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
virtual

We are very excited to announce guest speaker Lori Marino as she tells us about her latest project. Over 3,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises are held in concrete tanks in marine parks around the world. But there is a new future on the horizon as permanent seaside sanctuaries for cetaceans become an imminent reality. The Whale Sanctuary Project is creating a sanctuary where beluga whales and orcas currently living in tanks can experience a new life in a natural environment where their well-being and autonomy as intelligent, self-aware beings can be promoted. In this presentation Lori will describe plans for their ocean sanctuary in Port Hilford, Nova Scotia (the first seaside sanctuary in North America) and how it will serve as a gold standard for creating a new way to relate to cetaceans.

Lori Marino is a neuroscientist and expert in animal behavior and intelligence, and is internationally known for her work on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in dolphins and whales. This talk will leave you feeling in awe of Lori and the Whale Sanctuary team, who are creating this environment for orcas and beluga whales who are being retired from entertainment facilities or have been rescued from the ocean and need rehabilitation or permanent care. We can't wait!
