Swiftsure Bank important habitat for Resident killer whales?

Resident killer whales inhabiting the coastal waters of British Columbia are at risk, and little is known about their habitat use outside of the protected waters off the east coast of Vancouver Island, especially during the winter. Canada’s Species at Risk Act requires the identification and designation of critical habitats for these populations in Canadian waters in order to promote their recovery. Here, we used an autonomous acoustic recorder to collect Resident killer whale vocalizations over a two-year period to assess habitat use at Swiftsure Bank, which is adjacent to but not included in the protected critical habitat of endangered Southern Residents.
